DJ Melvin J. Schmeddlehoffer (not his real name) is a
die-hard vinyl junkie, and has been since the introduction of the
phonograph in, oh, 1877.
"None -- I never touch that stuff."
He first learned to spin records decades ago, and still loves to do it
the exact same way. He finds the repetitive nature of doing the same
thing year after year comforting.
And an added benefit of being a DJ, he says, is that "the ladies I play
for at the retirement home think I'm pretty sexy."
Ever since DJ Melvin saw HAL 9000 go berserk in 2001: A Space Odyssey,
he's had a deeply-held mistrust of computers. He's convinced that
they're unreliable, even evil, and wonders how people who use them can
be so gullible. He also points to his kids' 1982 Atari game console as
proof that "computers don't sound so good."
Every Saturday he enjoys mowing his lawn with a manual mower, which
takes him most of the day to finish but "it's that blade sharpening
every time that really takes a lot of effort." He calls friends using
his cherished rotary phone (one of only 7 still in actual use), and
always hangs up rather than "speak into the damn phone recording
thingy."
He doesn't use bank cards, credit cards or electronic money transfers,
preferring instead to barter for items he needs using a time-tested
currency -- sacks of wheat.
He doesn't use MixMeister, but he reports that the one DJ item he can't
live without is, "My vinyl collection."
"Oh, and my assortment of cases I bough to carry my vinyl collection
around in.
"And my wheeled carts to carry my cases around.
"And my van to carry my wheeled carts around.
"And the big new garage I built to fit my van into."
