Jean is a group fitness instructor who now creates
custom, beat-matched music mixes for her classes, and has a lot of fun
in the process. She reports that she used to buy compilation CD's, but
now she wants to customize the experience for her audience, with songs
and themes she's chosen herself.
"After using MixMeister for a while," she says, "I've realized I just
can't live without it."

"I never thought of myself as a DJ, but I spend a lot of my time making
mix CDs now. I just love music and being able to meld it together in new
ways is fun. I also enjoy playing a really good mix for a class and
seeing that people like it.
Sometimes I sit in on other people's fitness classes, and they just play
song after song with no flow. The participants like to get into a
rhythm, but then they lose the beat and lose their momentum. But there's
such a big difference for everyone when you get the music mixed just
right, and the beat just merges from one song to the next."
"I don't really have a pattern that I follow. I think of the profile I
want to do for a particular mix, and then I'll pick through thousands of
songs that I got from my CDs and from music download services.
MixMeister gives me the flexibility to sort through songs by lots of
criteria, so I tend to choose them based on length, BPM and the mood I'm
trying to create. Then I start moving songs around to find ones that
work well together, and go from there.
I really like that I can see the BPM of all my songs, so if I have a
class it's easy to start the tempo slowly and gradually build up to a
frantic ending -- people in the class think that's great."
"I like to keep in shape and I do a lot of cycling. I love dancing,
which is another way I combine music and fitness. I did some dance
choreography work in the past, but now I focus my creative energies on
making my music mixes instead. It's another form of choreography,
really, just with very different tools."
"I LOVE to overlay music and special effects to fit a certain mood.
Like last Halloween, I made a mix using lots of scary songs, then I
added screams and witches' cackles and ghosts booing, all interspersed
in appropriate places.
Once I did a jungle theme for a fitness class. I downloaded free sound
clips, and then put in roaring lions and tigers, tropical birds, and
some heavy rain in the background. It was great!
I know I'm a better fitness instructor because of my music. Participants
in my classes really appreciate the difference, and it's a whole new
motivation for me too."
