Share your music

So you’ve built a great mix.  Now what should you do with it?  Share it, of course!  MixMeister gives you several ways to do this. You can connect your computer to your stereo and use the playback features to listen to your playlist at a party.  You can even build a playlist “just-in-time” by adding songs to the end of the list as the party happens.  Don’t feel like dragging along your PC?  Then export your music to a CD.

Listening to your Playlist

Simply follow the techniques described in Review what you’ve done to hear your playlist without being a slave to your computer.

Building a Playlist live

MixMeister allows you to change the playlist during playback. It can even handle manipulations on the playing song itself. However, for best results, only change the playlist after the currently playing songs. This avoids jumps or breaks in the music that can arise from changing the playing song.

Exporting music to a CD

After you have created that killer mix, you'll probably want to create an audio CD from it. MixMeister works with your existing CD-R software to transfer the audio to CD. There are two ways to transfer the audio to CD. Both ways require a significant amount of hard disk space for temporary files. Building a CD will consume anywhere from a few hundred to 700MB of storage. You can delete these files after creating the CD, since you can also rebuild them with MixMeister.

To export to CD as one big track

  1. Create your very best mix. Make sure that the total time is less than 74 or 80 minutes, depending on the size of your CD-R.  Otherwise it won't fit on the disk.
  2. From the File menu, select Export Playlist to Mixed File(s)
  3. Make sure that the "Save As Type" is "Mixed Wave File"
  4. Make sure that "Create a separate track file for each song" is not checked
  5. Choose the desired filename (e.g. filename.wav) and press save.
  6. After MixMeister finishes exporting, open the CD burning software that came with your CD-R drive.
  7. Following the directions from your CD-R software, create an audio CD using your exported mix (e.g. filename.wav).

To export to CD with one track per song

  1. Create your very best mix. Make sure that the total time is less than 74 minutes.  Otherwise it won't fit on the disk.
  2. From the File menu, select Export Playlist to Mixed File(s)
  3. Make sure that the "Save As Type" is "Mixed Wave File"
  4. Choose the desired filename (e.g. filename.wav) and press Save.
  5. Make sure that "Create a separate track file for each song" is checked.
  6. Press save.  MixMeister will create a series of wave files. The names of the files will be: "filename - track 000.wav" "filename - track 001.wav" and so on.
  7. Using your CD-R software, create an audio CD with a track for each file. Make sure that you select the songs in the proper order. Important: Make sure that you select "Disc-At-Once" mode in the CD-R software. Doing so ensures that the tracks all flow together into a continuous mix. Otherwise, you may get 2 second gaps between songs.

Webcasting

MixMeister enables you to send live playback to local or remote listeners as a Webcast. Webcasting relies on Windows Media streaming to make this happen. You’ll get the best results between machines connected directly to Internet or connected on the same LAN (Local Area Network). Other configurations may work, depending on your network configuration.

To receive the MixMeister Webcast (and to monitor locally), you'll need the Windows Media Player version 4.1 or higher. You can download the player, free of charge, from the Microsoft website.

To start Webcasting

  1. Click on the Webcast menu in MixMeister.
  2. Select the bit rate you want to use to transmit the audio data. Higher bit rates sound better but consume more network resources. If you are Webcasting across a conventional modem, you'll need to use the lower speeds. For example, 28.8 FM Stereo should work on a 33.6 modem.
  3. Click on the Webcast menu again.
  4. Select Enable Webcasting.  MixMeister will now send the main playback to the Webcast instead of the soundcard. Previewing songs in the catalog will still play through the speakers.
  5. Press Play.  The Webcast address will be displayed in the status bar in the lower right of the screen. It will look like this:  mms://mycomputer:7007
  6. (Optional) Click on the Webcast menu and select the Monitor Webcast (requires Windows Media Player) menu item to hear what you are sending across the network. Windows Media Player will open and play the Webcast through the speakers. Keep in mind that what you hear will be about 10 seconds later than what MixMeister is playing.

To receive a Webcast across a LAN

  1. On the remote PC, click the Windows Start button and then select Run….
  2. In the open box, type the Webcast address that appears in the status bar in MixMeister where the music is playing. It will look like this:  mms://mycomputer:7007
  3. Windows Media Player will open and begin playing the music that is being sent by the Webcasting PC. (If this doesn't work, please see Troubleshooting.)

To receive a Webcast across the Internet

To receive a Webcast across the Internet, you will need to know the IP (Internet Protocol) address of the Webcasting computer.   The address will be four sets of numbers separated by periods (for example, 201.22.144.18).  See To Determine the Webcasting Computer’s IP Address if you need help getting the IP address.  Once you know the IP address, do the following:

  1. On the receiving PC, click the Windows Start button and then select Run….
  2. In the Open box, type the following (substitute the IP address of the Webcasting PC for xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx):
                            mms://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:7007

At this point, the Windows Media Player will open and begin playing the Webcast. Keep in mind that it may take as long as 20 seconds to buffer and start playing.

To determine the Webcasting computer’s IP address

You can use the following steps if you know the name of the Webcasting computer.  The name is displayed as part of the Webcast address in the status bar of MixMeister.  For example, if the status bar says “Webcasting on mms://ABCXYZ:7007 at 128 kbps (local output disabled)”, then the name of your PC is ABCXYZ.  Once you know the name of the computer, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the PC that is sending the Webcast
  2. Open the Command Prompt from the Windows Start menu.  This will open a DOS-like window.
  3. In the Command Prompt window, type the following, substituting the name of your computer for mycomputer:
                            ping mycomputer

In the command prompt window you will now see something that looks like this:

      Reply from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128

The text that appears in place of the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx in the above example is the IP address.

Alternatively, you could open up the network control panel and view the IP properties. The procedure for this will vary based on what version of Windows you are running and your network configuration.
